Border Monuments - 1

1 BM
Along the US-Mexico border, from the Rio Grande to the Pacific Ocean - along 690 miles, crossing valleys and mountain ranges and cutting through cities and towns- there are 276 obelisks that mark the boundary established at the end of the Mexican-American War of 1848. The initial survey took 6 years (1849-1855) and was undertaken by William Emory (US) and Jose Ylarregui (Mexico). It resulted in 7 monuments and 45 rock cairns. The second survey took place between 1892 and 1894 and increased the number of monuments from 52 to 258. The new obelisks were iron and sourced from El Paso. In the early 1900s, additional monuments were installed by the International Border Commission bringing the total to 276.
Special thanks to my friends Dr. Raphael Diaz-Malpica and Spring Anderson for helping with this project.
