North Highland Dam
The North Highlands Dam was originally constructed in 1899. It was destroyed by a flood in 1901, and was rebuild in 1903. It originally provided power to Bibb City Mill. The small lake above it is known as Bibb Pond. It was purchased by Georgia Power in 1930, and underwent extensive upgrades to its current state in 1963.

Rail Road Street Bridge
The Rail Road Street Bridge in Columbus crosses the Chattahoochee River just north of the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge. On the Georgia side, it borders the new Mercer Medical School Campus. It was originally constructed in 1855 by the Montgomery and West Point Railroad Company to link Columbus to Opelika and Montgomery. In 1865 this bridge was defended on both the Alabama and Georgia side of the river by the Confederates during the Battle of Columbus. After Columbus fell, it was destroyed by Union troops. It was reconstructed later that year. In 1888, after a series of mergers and acquisitions, the bridge was acquired by the Central of Georgia Rail Road, as part of its Savanah-Macon-Columbus-Birmingham line. The Central of Georgia is now a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern.

Government Center / 9th Street
The twelve story Government Center is the most prominent building on the Columbus skyline. On January 1, 1970 Columbus - Muscogee County became the first consolidated city-county government in the State of Georgia. This building which was completed in 1973, holds the Superior Court and the State Court of the 3rd Judicial District. There are excellent views of downtown from the top floor of this steel and glass structure.

The Oliver Dam
The Oliver Dam is one of 13 dams on the Chattahoochee River. It was constructed in 1959 for the purpose of power generation. Hydroelectric generation makes up about 8% of Georgia Power's total output. Because the dam was constructed at the Fall Line of the Chattahoochee River, the river drops 100 feet in elevation between the dam and downtown Columbus. Lake Oliver is is entirely within the city limits of Columbus, and serves as the municipal water supply for the city.

Omaha Railroad Bridge
This railroad bridge is just south of Fort Benning, and connects Omaha Georgia to Cottonton Alabama. This history of this landmark is murky, but here is what I have been able to piece together. The original bridge at this location was build by the Savanah-Americus-Montgomery Railroad in the 1890's. After a series of acquisitions this line became part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway. This bridge, which is the only vertical lift bridge in the state, was constructed in 1969 (I think). It was last used in 1999. It is now owned by the Heart of Georgia Railroad.

Riverfront
The Eagle & Phenix Industrial Complex contributes to Columbus's iconic riverfront. The complex consists of three mills, two boiler chimneys, a water tower, and several other buildings. The current structures were constructed between 1869 and 1885. At the height of production, the mill employed 1,800 employees who processed 100 different varieties of cotton on 1,500 looms.

The Columbus railway yard predates the civil war. It served as a central junction for the Southern and the Central of Georgia Railway Companies. The Union Station Railway Terminal was constructed in 1901, and it now houses the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
